Marchmont Home, Belleville, Ontario, Canada
Prior to William Quarrier opening his own 'Distribution Home', Fairknowe at Brockville, Ontario in 1887, children from the Orphan Homes of Scotland were initially placed at the Homes of others engaged in the migration scheme. One such Home was Marchmont, established by Annie Parlane McPherson (1825-1904) who predated William Quarrier's involvement in the scheme, migrating children from London to Canada.
Children would stay a few days or a few weeks in the Distribution Homes, also know as 'Receiving Homes' until suitable placements or families had been identified for them from amongst those who expressed interest in taking them.
