Half the girls' migration party on the deck of the Allan Line, SS Siberian June 13th 1885
The girls were the third migration party of 1885, the only year three groups went.
Each of the 140 girls was equipped with the usual 'Bible, copy of 'Pilgrim's Progress', a writing desk with materials, brush and comb, and a work bag with needles, thread, worsted for darning etc'*. All this would have been packed in an individual wooden trunk along with 'a nicely trimmed dress and hat for Sabbath wear and a wincey dress and dark hat for winter, a liberal supply of underclothing both for summer and winter, three pairs boots, four pairs stockings, ties, gloves, collars, aprons and pinafores, and warm Ulster, hood and cravat, etc.'*
