The Bible
William Quarrier was a devout Christian. His work in ‘rescuing’ children and subsequently migrating many of them to Canada was firmly based on the verse in the gospel of St.Matthew:
“Inasmuch as ye have done it to the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
In reference to this idea that caring for others was caring for Jesus Christ, each child was not only given a Bible but was expected to read it
