Course content: Assessment

Case study (part two)

ASSESSMENT OF RISK

First one-to-one session. Negotiated confidentiality before began to talk, explained limits (significant risk of harm, child protection) and negotiated who Stacie would like information to be shared with, and what information.

Full assessment through open-ended questions and reflective listening within non-judgemental, empathic relationship.

Substance Misuse

Sniffed petrol daily over at least previous 2 months, plus takes cannabis and alcohol at weekends. (Gets pocket money on Friday. On Saturday goes into nearby town to go to an Attendance Centre and meets friends afterwards, goes to the pub with them.) Has sniffed petrol intermittently over previous 3 years. Can't remember the last day she didn't have any. A friend uses Stacie's money to buy a can of petrol which she uses daily until it is gone, then buys some more. Has passed out in the past but come round on her own. Gets vivid hallucinations that she enjoys and doesn't find frightening. Limited knowledge of drug effects/ side effects, including incorrect beliefs based on myth and hearsay.

Physical Health

Lethargic, chest problems, headaches, poor concentration and little motivation to do anything.

Emotional Health

Reports feeling generally positive but problems play on her mind. Things aren't as bad as they were. Stacie refers to an incident "with me and a paedophile" but does not wish to discuss this further.

Social Circumstances

No regular contact with Mum, she asked her to leave after she stole her credit card, and damaged her home, for which she pressed charges. Is liable to remain 'looked after' until 16th birthday when she will be transferred to an Aftercare Social Worker. She has not attended education regularly for a year, and has not been entered for any GCSEs. Other than obligations under the Youth Offending Team, she has no regular constructive activities. She spends the majority of time at her foster home, and has made a few friends in the area. Some of these misuse drugs. Most are older than her.
