Practice Learning - adult substance misuse
A student spoke about her experience of working in an adult substance misuse outreach service. She had read the agency's policies and procedures in respect of their responsibility towards children. She observed an adult queuing at a needle exchange with a pre-school child. The student made links with what she had read both at the agency and in university and recognised that she needed to think about the child and asked herself "should this child be here and will this child be ok when she leaves here?" While the adult and child were still there she sought advice from a colleague. Although she did not take the lead with the immediate intervention which followed she was able to identify the learning from this experience.

- How would you know that this child was not of concern?
- What does fine look like?

The student was able to listen to the parent and identify that it was not a social work resource which was most appropriate. They then researched what resources were in the area by talking to social work and health visiting colleagues and provided the parent with appropriate information.
