Long-Term Sentence

Prisoners sentenced to periods in custody of four years and over are classified by the Scottish Prison Service as long term. This classification includes those who are sentenced to life imprisonment.

Prisoners sentenced to ten years and over are likely to be transferred to the National Induction Unit, currently at HMP Shotts, within a short period of their sentence.
